Pacific NW: Victoria & Tea at The Empress

Helllloooo there!!!  I didn’t disappear I swear!  I was just on vacation, and leading up to vacation was craziness at work and getting ready for said vacation.

Brian and I went out west to Seattle to visit my mom.  She is living there temporarily for work, so that leaves us a free place to stay right in downtown Seattle!

She also took the days off that we were there, and we had a blast exploring Seattle as well as heading to Victoria, BC for 2 days.

I’ll do part 1 of our time in Victoria :)

Thursday morning we took a ferry right from Seattle, through the Puget Sound and into Victoria, BC which is on Vancouver Island.

IMG_5054

The ferry takes just under 3 hours, which put us in Victoria at around 10:30am!

IMG_5057

That’s the Empress Hotel where we would be staying that night.  One of our top activities we wanted to do while in Victoria was the well known afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel.

You already know mom and I love to go to afternoon tea, and we have been going every Mothers Day for years to various locations around Boston.

After checking into the hotel, we set out to explore.

IMG_5071

Victoria is a really cute city with lots of shops and very walkable as a visitor.

Later on we went back to the hotel to change for tea!  This was Brian’s first afternoon tea.

We had the classic afternoon tea and each selected the type of tea we wanted to drink.  Mom and I both chose the Empress Blend.

First to come out was fresh organic blueberries with whipped cream

Tea

IMG_5096

A classic tea service generally has finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and finally pastries and sweets.

IMG_5097

The tower was served with 3 each of everything.

IMG_5098

From left to right:  smoked salmon, egg salad, curried chicken salad, ham and cucumber, and a sun dried tomato tapenade.

I’ve never liked egg salad, but I actually tried it this time and wasn’t too bad!  Not crazy about it, but I liked it :)

My favorite was the smoked salmon.

The best part, in my opinion,…scones

IMG_5099

These were particularly delicious scones…light and fluffy with Devonshire cream and strawberry jam.

IMG_5100

For the sweets we have French macarons in the back, then a pear cheesecake, in front of that is a pistachio/chocolate checkerboard cake covered in marzipan, and little lemon tartlets up front.

IMG_5101

By this point I’m getting too full to finish but had to try everything.  They were all so good it’s hard to pick a favorite…although I am partial to lemon curd :)

We all had a wonderful afternoon

Can’t wait to share pictures from the Butchart Gardens and our Sea Plane ride back to Seattle…THAT was awesome.

Mom’s Tea and Relay Week!

Another rainy day here in Boston, but at least we were gifted with a gorgeous weekend to celebrate Mother’s Day!

My Saturday morning started out with a beautiful run with Elizabeth! We did one of my favorite running routes in South Boston along the water.

IMG_2621

It was a tad warm as far as ideal running conditions go, but I couldn’t complain…it was so nice to feel the warm sun!

We did about 5.5 miles.

IMG_2624

That was probably my last run before the Reach the Beach Relay this Friday!!!  I seriously can NOT believe it’s here already and I’m getting SO pumped!  The total of my 3 legs is 15.5 miles.  I haven’t had too many long runs these days but I’m confident that I’ll be just fine :)

Came home, showered, came out of the shower to find this furball on the living room chair…where he is NOT allowed, and he knows it.  Sly little guy.

IMG_2626

He made himself quite comfy.

That afternoon was my mom and my annual Mother’s Day tea!

Mother’s Day 2009 – The Taj
Mother’s Day 2010 – Boston Harbor Hotel
Mother’s Day 2011 – L’Espalier

And for Mother’s Day 2012 we did a repeat and went to L’Espalier again!

We’ve gone to most all of the high teas in Boston…years before I had the blog of course, and once at Christmas Time.  So I feel like we now can repeat our favorites or go to another city :)

Honestly though, what made me pick L’Espalier again is their cheese tray!

IMG_2649

In addition to the usual tea sandwiches and pastries you can also order a sampling of 5 cheeses with their accompaniments.

One new aspect of the tea this year though was that they now employ Tea Sommelier Cynthia Gold!  I remember her from tea at the Park Plaza hotel and at the time she was the only Tea Sommelier around.  So it was a nice surprise to see her at L’Espalier.

The presentation started with a waiter pouring hot water into a wine glass at each of our table settings.  Confusing at first.

But then Cynthia came over with a hand tied flowering tea satchel/pod.  We were instructed to drop it into the hot water.

IMG_2627

IMG_2628

We were told it would slowly open and gradually release 3 different type of flowering teas.

It was quite fun to watch it change over the course of our tea service.

IMG_2630

IMG_2633

For my  first tea from the menu I ordered the L’Espalier Afternoon BlendThis signature tea consists of a blend of Darjeeling and three Sri Lankan Estate teas as well as two Chinese green teas lightly scented with jasmine, Italian oil of bergamot, and grapefruit peel.

I loved this blend!

IMG_2629

Although I think my favorite of the day was the Chefs Blend my mom ordered later.

IMG_2645

Tea Sandwiches

IMG_2635

As good as they were I was pretty disappointed we were missing the warm ham and cheese sandwich that was on last year’s plate.  But the crab salad was a nice change and I’m always happy when there is NO egg salad ;)

Cheeses:

IMG_2636

All were delicious except for the one on the far right.  It was a VERY strong blue cheese…clear your sinuses strong, and just not very pleasant to my mom and I.  Otherwise there was a mild creamy cheese made from a combo of goats, sheep, and cow’s milk; a soft goat blue, one in a gruyere style, another in the raclette family, and another sheep’s milk cheese I can’t remember.

Accompaniments:IMG_2638

After the cheese and sandwiches were done it was Sweets time!

IMG_2642

Very similar to last year, but delicious none the less.  At the top of that picture you can see the scones as well.  Served with Devonshire cream and jam.  I could just eat the scones and skip dessert entirely…so good.

Delectable and Cute…

IMG_2641

At this point we’re usually pretty full so we ended up bringing some leftovers home to Brian…lucky guy!

Somehow missed a shot of mom and I :(  But did grab and outfit pic!

IMG_2654

  • Blue Dress – H&M
  • Neon pink belt – Express
  • Sandals – Nine West (via Macy’s)

IMG_2656

Loved that it was warm enough for bare legs AND arms!!

Speaking of mom… she’s going to be spending a LOT of time in Seattle this summer and into the Fall!!  No one in my family has ever been so we’re no help but do any of you know any good places out there??  Restaurants?  Must-see sites?  Stores?  Bakeries ;)??

Hope you all had a great Mother’s Day!  Especially my friends (blog and “real life”) who celebrated their first Mother’s Day this year!!

Tea at L’Espalier

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you may remember that I have made a little tradition out of taking my mom for high tea to celebrate Mothers Day!

There is always a family brunch at one of my aunt’s houses on Mother’s Day itself, so the Saturday before I always make plans for mom and I.

I think this is the 5th or 6th year of our tea tradition, and while we may run out of new places to go, I don’t think we’ll mind repeating a few ;)

2008 – Holiday Tea at the Park Plaza (we had our Mother’s day tea here that same year)

2009 – Tea at The Taj

2010 – Tea at the Boston Harbor Hotel (at the Sea Grille)

For instance, today we had a relaxing and delicious tea at L’Espalier.  I have been to Afternoon Tea at L’Espalier twice in the past, but both times were at their old location which was a beautiful brownstone off Newbury Street.  They are now located in the new Mandarin Orient Hotel.

IMG_8866

Definitely a different atmosphere.  New and modern.  The old place was elegant and classic, which I prefer, but that’s not to say the new location is still beautiful and of course the food and service are still top notch.

We even added a little something special to this years tea…CHEESE!  But I’ll get to that in a moment.

Once you pick your tea, and order, the first thing that comes out is your tea sandwiches.

By the way… mom went with English Breakfast (no surprise there :)  and I had the Earl Grey.

IMG_8867

Clockwise from the top-left:

  • Smoked Salmon
  • Egg salad on a brioche bun
  • Lobster salad on a house made pretzle roll
  • grilled ham and cheese
  • cucumber and cream cheese

I’m not an egg salad fan, and mom doesn’t really like smoked salmon so we always switch those :)

IMG_8868

My favorite, hands down, was the ham and cheese…and if you know me, you’re shocked I didn’t say the lobster.

The ham and cheese was just so incredibly flavorful!  Rich buttery toasted bread, grainy mustard, melty cheese, and salty ham.  It was awesome.

The lobster was #2.  Of course I LOVE lobster, and the pretzel roll had a great shiny crust and super soft on the inside, with delicious big salt crystals.

IMG_8869

Once finished with our sandwiches, the wonderful wonderful cheese tray came our way.

Did you know you can pop up to L’Espalier and just have a glass of wine and some cheese in their Salon anytime??  I am SO doing this.

IMG_8870

Luckily I have descriptions (all descriptions taken from the L’Espalier Cheese Selection pamphlet)

From Right to Left (which was mildest to strongest)

  • Lakes Edge – Blue Ledge Farm – Salisbury, VT
    • Greg and Hannah keep 60 goats on their Lake Champlain farm.  Lakes Edge is ash rubbed, soft/dense in texture, with a satisfying earthy and tangy flavor.  The pure white interior paste is bisected with a thin line of ash.
  • Caccio Di Bosco – Tuscany, Italy
    • This is a dense, aged sheep’s milk cheese studded with white truffle.  The buttery, sharpness of the cheese forms a perfect marriage with the woodsy opulence of the truffle.  A bit of honey will consummate the deal.
  • Tarentaise – Spring Brook Farm – Reading, VT
    • Firm, nutty, and wonderfully herbaceous artisan mountain cheese made by Jeremy Robinson from the milk of Jersey cows.  It was chosen Third Best in Show at this years American Cheese Society judging (um how does one get on that panel??)
  • Taleggio Reserve, Lombardia, Italy
    • Meaty and supple, with a nutty and slightly tart flavor, Elegant and irresistible.

The server said this is the “new” version of Taleggio which is made from raw milk and is not quite as strong
  • Gouda – Aged Five Years – Holland
    • Crunchy, with a sweet caramel flavor.  Eat it like candy.
  • Caveman Blue – Rogue Creamery – Central Point, Oregon
    • Another winner from Cary Bryant and David Gremmel.  The cheese is creamy and muscular, with a sweet start and pungent earthy finish.

IMG_8872

They were all amazing…aside from the blue cheese, but that’s more of me (and mom) just not being big fans of blue cheese to begin with.

The mild goat cheese (far right) was sooo creamy, mild…not too tangy, the ash didn’t take away from the cheese.  We both loved it.

The 2nd from the right, was basically Truffle Cheese and obviously we both loved it!

I’m serious when I say we loved them all.  I haven’t had too much tallegio before, but I do remember it being strong and I remember liking it…well this new version is even better.

Of course there were cheese accompaniments…

IMG_8871

Breads, honey with toasted pine nuts, candied walnuts, and cranberries.

We ended up packing a lot of cheese to go (we still had dessert on the way), but I can’t wait to dig into the leftovers!

Now the sweet stuff.

IMG_8873

Their signature swan pastry.  Basically a cream puff, filled with a espresso filling.

To the right is a Greek yogurt panna cotta…tangy and refreshing.

IMG_8874

Chocolate decadence in the front… no need for explanation…but it was RICH.

In back there is a little financier cookie.

IMG_8876

Red Velvet parfait.  Basically red velvet cake crumbs, layered with cream cheese frosting.

and my favorite…

IMG_8878

Scones!

IMG_8877

Cherry and Pistachio scones and Lemon scones.  Served with strawberry jam, honey, and crème fraiche.

I always say this but if you’ve never done high tea/afternoon tea…DO IT!  It just makes for such a relaxing elegant activity.  Plus it’s a perfect opportunity to get the girls (or boys) together, dress up, and snack on tasty tea sandwiches, delicious pastries, and sip your favorite tea.

Have you been to afternoon tea?  Any favorite spots??  and what are you doing for your mom this Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom!!!!  Love you!!

Tea with Mom

For the past few years I've taken my mom to tea at various beautiful tea spots around the city. We've had tea at L'espalier (before it went all modern and moved into the new Mandarin Orient Hotel), and the Park Plaza Hotel last year! This year we did "Tea at the Taj". The Taj is the former Ritz Carlton...the classic "Tea at the Ritz". My mom took my cousin and I there when I was about 6, but back then I didn't drink tea and was served the most amazing hot chocolate ever...I still remember it.
Thankfully, when the Taj bought the Ritz the only thing that really changed was the name. The inside was still as beautiful and regal as ever. We were sat, and then I had to choose my tea.
I chose the Jasmine Green Tea, and was served my own personal pot on a candle warmerI definitely get this from my grandmother, but I am obsessed with tea cups now...hopefully I'll have a collection like hers someday.
First was savory tea sandwiches
  • Egg Salad
  • smoked salmon with chives, cream cheese, and caviar
  • lobster profiteroles
  • cucumber sandwiches
  • prosciutto and cantaloupe sandwiches
I give my mom my egg salad(gross) and I get her smoked salmon!

My favorite was OBVIOUSLY the lobster...mmmm, I think it had a little hint of tarragon or fennel or something! I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was delicious.

Look how gorgeous the cucumber sandwich was! Then the tower of sweetsLets see if I can remember it all...
  • Chocolate covered strawberries
  • mini vanilla cream puffs (YUM!)
  • currant scones and lemon scones served with clotted cream and lemon curd!!
  • little chocolate/mocha opera cake
  • mini lemon meringue tart
  • mini Madeleine
  • mini french pistachio macaroon (SO good)
  • and I still can't figure out what that little thing with the raspberry was...it was cakey and dense and rich.
The chocolate strawberries had the Taj sealBest mom ever!!Our view of Newbury Street I had to snap a picture of these flowers on the way out...Gorgeous!Peonies, orchids, hydrangeas, and roses! Peonies are my FAVORITE flower ever.

It was a great weekend with mom :)

How about a big YAY for Monday being over! and I'm not gonna lie I can't believe the season finale of Gossip Girl is already here next week!
