Sweet October Endings

How is it possible that it’s already November?!  Not that I’m complaining…it’s my birthday month and in my head anytime after Halloween is fair game for Christmas music :)

However, I will say the last weekend of October was fun and delicious.

Starting with French ToastIMG_5981

I’ve been on a French toast kick lately and after receiving a loaf of Cranberry-Walnut bread care of Danish Pastry House (an end-of-day loaf, and my friend who is a co-owner graciously grabbed a few loaves for her friends!) I knew it would be the perfect vessel to soak up an eggy-cinnamon-vanilla mixture!

French Toast for 2

  • 4 slices bread (this is a great time to use up stale bread!)
  • 2-4 eggs (you’ll need more eggs if you have bigger slices of bread, or bread that is slightly stale; fresh sandwich bread requires much less liquid)
  • 2-4 T milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (more or less to taste)

You know the drill…soak bread til it’s very wet…not too soggy that its falling apart though.  Cook over a medium heat skillet coated with canola oil spray!  Approx. 2-3 min per side until golden.

And of course, real maple syrup on top or on the side for dipping!

This pairs nicely with a fresh cappuccino of course.  I even went for the juice glass of OJ!

Other weekend Activities:

Homebrew Operations – Kegging.  Oh yes we have kegs, and did I mention a second fridge now, esp for said kegs?

IMG_5993The bright side is that we have a fresh keg of homemade Pumpkin Porter in the basement ;)

Homemade Cider Donuts!

My mom made these for us for Brian.

I couldn’t help myself!  Although this lasted all of 2 min…Bromley wasn’t as much of a fan.  He just stood there and wouldn’t move, poor guy ;)

This was also the very FIRST year I didn’t dress up for Halloween…slightly sad.  I really do enjoy dressing up, but it’s the actual thinking of/then purchasing a costume which I can’t stand.  Oh well…always next year!

Chickpeas turned into Hummus

This Hummus included:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3-4 T lemon juice (depending on taste)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 clove garlic

Love hummus :)  Still not in love with the recipe, but it’s getting there.  I think it’s too thick??  Suggestions?

My favorite way to eat it right now: in a wrap or pita with tabbouleh

There’s something about opening a brand new fresh jar of Peanut Butter…

I immediately crave said PB on soft bread with a smear of strawberry jam :)

Bromley wanted some too…  This is his “I’m so cute, give me food” trick.

Actually he can balance on his back legs for a LONG time!!  It’s hard not to laugh when you’re trying to teach him not to beg!

Amidst the great food and cute pups, there was also a bit of Birthday Shopping :)  I think I need to start sharing some purchases!

  2. French toast...mmm. Whenever I end up with a special/different kind of bread, its the first thing I make! Tasty tasty. I can relate to you on the keg front, we have a keggerator. I got it for Josh for Christmas a few years back. And the puppers could not look any cuter in that costume

  6. Love the costume.

I think you need a bit more water and a bit less tahini! My suggestion is to start by adding just a little of everything- no measurements- until you reach the right consistency.

The problem with hummus is that every batch of chick peas is different, and every lemon has a different amount of lemon juice etc etc etc... so every time you need to try and recreate the "recipe" to get the right taste and consistency! Good luck!

  7. I definitely agree... less tahini. I use 1/4 cup with 2 cans chickpeas. I also add the juice of at least 2 lemons and sometimes a little bit of the chickpea water to thin it. Also, if you are a fan of hot sauce, a few dashes of that does wonders!

Bromley is so adorable. My pup stands on his back legs sometimes too and it's so stinkin cute.
